Track Review – The Courteeners ‘The 17th’ (includes lyrics)

The Courteeners at midnight released their latest single ‘The 17th’ from their forthcoming album ‘Mapping The Rendezvous’. The band haven’t produced an EP since ‘Concrete Love’ in 2014 but have since continued live performances attracting their biggest crowd at their unforgettable Heaton Park gig last year. The gig will be released on DVD with the album on October 21st on Ignition.

‘The 17th’ makes use of Fray’s lyrical talent already cemented with tracks like ‘Sunflower’ from their last album and the popular ‘Smiths Disco’. Piano keys light up the intro to the song and electric guitar licks infrequently throughout.

“Everyone can hear you but nobody’s listening, we’ve got another wedding and another christening,” Fray’s typical romance prepares us for another kick.

It crescendos like ‘The Opener’ and leaves enough to the imagination to be incredibly excited about the rest of the album. ‘The 17th’ is an impressive insight to the range of styles The Courteeners can explore, combining Fray’s dulcet tones with energetic lead guitar, it slows and quickens erratically and certainly wets the appetite for ‘Mapping The Rendezvous’.

Liam Fray told The Independent’s Jacob Scolworthy: “It’s probably the best reaction we’ve ever had. It’s taken us a bit by surprise; when you’re in the middle of [recording], you’ve got no idea what everyone’s going to think.”

Lyrics:

When you come home the neighbours look at you funny
Thank someone, I dunno, maybe God
That you’re not new money
So it’s up the stairs and lock the world away
And then its phone off, for the rest of the day

The afternoon is peppered with regret
And all the things that you’re trying to forget
But just know that you’re not on your own, no you’re not on your own

Yellow Lambretta is knocked on it’s side
It’s begging you to steal it and go for a ride
Just let me know and I’ll meet you on the 17th
And you can bore me again with how much you love Halloween
How much you love Halloween

Yours afternoons are peppered with regret
And all the things that you wanna forget
But just know that you’re not on your own, no you’re not on your own

If you’ve risen just the second that the sun goes down
You wash away your sins and feel the pull of the town
Know that you’re not on your own, no you’re not on your own

Everyone can hear you but, nobody’s listening
We’ve got another wedding and another christening
We have to go to before we get to the summer
Might have to back door it, and do another runner
Like someone I used to know
But please don’t go there

Because we’re having such a good time, having such a good time
We’re having such a good time, having such a good time

The Irish bar is kicking out for the first time
It seems nobody is playing Shanghai like last night
So let’s find that place with the pink neon sign
The one that points to you and says, “do you wanna be mine?”

Everyone can hear you, but nobody’s listening
I wanna be someone but haven’t got the discipline
A perfect picture for everyone to see
Never get emotional, get another degree
Like someone I used to know
But please don’t go there

Because we’re having such a good time, having such a good time
We’re having such a good time, having such a good time
