Noel is back with the second track of his forthcoming album, ‘Chasing Yesterday’ (released 2nd March), and the real gift of this song is the video. The song is pretty standard High Flying Birds, its melodic and easy-listening, although I’d have to disagree with Noel’s comment that it’s “the greatest song [he’s] ever written.”
The video is all about his hatred of music videos, back in the Oasis era he gave a famous interview about the difficulty of shooting for days for a video, and this is explored in “Ballad of The Mighty I”.
The first 30 seconds features Noel being told how to act in the video, and the director insisting taking a ‘selfie’ of the two. (Note: what a horrible word that is, ‘selfie’, who thought of that?) But after a few slight keys the song drifts into typical drums and catchy guitar, ascending into a brilliant chorus.
The disappointment with this video was that Johnny Marr, who features on the track on guitar, is absent from the video, which is available to watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzQYtpjMjSo
At the end of the video, the director ‘accidentally’ calls Noel, Liam. He then says, in reaction to him walking off when asked to do another take, “Chris Martin did 10 takes”. It’s funny, its a light humour that makes the 6 minutes of video 6 minutes well-spent. The song isn’t half bad either, and now the album release is something sticking out on the calendar for the first half of 2015.
