Live Review – Happy Mondays (Kendal Calling Festival 02/08/14)

Madchester heroes the Happy Mondays were second down the bill on Saturday and attracted the biggest non-headline crowd of the entire weekend. With an incredible backlog of hits and a performance style that can’t be mirrored, fans both young and old followed Bez’s footsteps in the mud.
“Loose Fit” and “Kinky Afro” opened the set and were greeted with a rapturous reception, but the highlight was the back to back renditions of the iconic “24 Hour Party People” and the anthem “Step On”.
The strength in the voice of Rowetta is staggering, less so is the lack of power in Shaun Ryder’s, who requires to coast at a low volume, allowing him to spit his famous lyrics to an adoring crowd. This set was a personal highlight of the weekend and one of the best the festival has ever presented.
